How Long Is Recovery After Liposuction?

Many New Jersey residents have trouble achieving their perfect body shape. Stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise are a common problem. Fortunately, there is a simple and permanent solution. At Dr. Gregory E Rauscher, M.D. in Hackensack, NJ, we offer liposuction, a treatment that allows patients to achieve their ideal figure within a few months.

How Long Is Recovery After Liposuction?

Most patients take around four to six weeks to fully recover from lipoplasty, but it all depends on the individual situation, the type of surgery the person had, and the treatment area. During the first few days, patients have to stay at home and limit their movement. After a week, most can return to work, as long as their job doesn’t involve strenuous physical exercise. Several checkups at the clinic might be necessary after the operation.

The First Hours

Once we’re done removing excess fat and re-shaping your tissues, we’ll place a compression garment on your treatment area to speed up the healing process and make sure you achieve the desired shape. You might not have to stay in the clinic overnight, but you’ll need someone to take you home and spend the night with you because you can’t drive and perform your regular activities for a few hours.

Avoid scheduling anything else on the day of your operation because you need time to recover. We recommend that you clean your house, prepare your meals, and organize grocery deliveries before your surgery, so you don’t have to worry about what you’ll eat and how you’ll access essential items.

The First Few Days

A day after the operation, you’ll be able to get up and move around again. Don’t do any strenuous exercise or take a shower yet. Instead, go for very short walks or move your limbs about without putting pressure on the treatment area. At some point in the first week, you’ll come back to the clinic to have your compression garments removed. At that time, we’ll check that the recovery process is going according to plan.

After a Week

People who have desk jobs can return to work a few days after their operation. To prevent complications, they might start with half-days or work from home. Those who have to perform strenuous physical tasks during their workday will need to book at least three or four weeks off.

After the first week, we recommend that you gently massage the treatment area to spread the fluid around. You can move more freely now because you’re no longer wearing the compression garment. Despite this, it’s important not to overdo it. Skip strenuous workouts until you’ve been given the all-clear by the surgeon.

After Four to Six Weeks

You’re more or less back to normal after four to six weeks. At that point, you can resume your regular exercise routine, visit saunas, and use hot tubs. You’ll also be able to admire your results for the first time. Most people’s bodies keep changing and adapting to the new situation for up to twelve weeks. After three months, you’ll know the outcome of your surgery.

Are the Results Permanent?

Most doctors consider the results of lipoplasty permanent because fat tissue doesn’t grow back once it’s been removed from the body. Even if you gain a lot of weight, your treatment area won’t look like it did before lipoplasty. However, the surrounding tissues might increase in size, so your body will appear uneven, and you might require more surgery.

To keep your results fresh in the long term, lead a healthy lifestyle. Replace substances like alcohol, sugary snacks, and fatty foods with nutritious alternatives that provide your body with vitamins and minerals. Exercise at least two to three times a week. Reduce your stress levels, and make sure you always have enough time in your week to prepare healthy foods.

Am I a Good Candidate for Lipoplasty in New Jersey?

You’re eligible for lipoplasty if you’re close to your target weight. This surgery isn’t meant as a weight loss method, and it doesn’t replace a healthy diet and exercise routine. Instead, it helps you to get rid of stubborn pockets of fat that can only be addressed with surgery. If you’re currently pregnant or breastfeeding, we’ll delay treatment because your body is likely to change significantly in the next few months.

People who have a serious disease or an active infection at the treatment site aren’t eligible, and they need to wait until they are better. Those with mild to moderate medical issues are often good candidates, but it depends on the medication they take. When in doubt, we always communicate with the patient’s primary physician to find out whether lipoplasty is appropriate.
