Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Enlargement?

Do you feel like the size of your breasts makes your upper body and lower body disproportionate? If so, there is a pretty good chance you will be considered a good candidate for a breast enlargement at the office of Dr. Gregory E. Rauscher, M.D. in Hackensack, NJ. If you think breast augmentation can help you improve your self-confidence, keep reading to find out if this procedure is a good fit for you.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Enlargement?

There is a good chance that you will be considered a good breast enlargement candidate if you believe you would look and feel better if your breasts were larger. However, you need to attend an initial consultation to verify that this treatment is both safe and effective. You can feel pretty confident that you will be considered a good candidate for this procedure if:

You Are Pretty Healthy

To be considered a good candidate for a breast enlargement or any other elective procedure, it is important that you are in relatively good health. The healthier you are, the more likely this procedure will be deemed safe for you. Furthermore, the healthier you are, the easier and faster your recovery should be. If you are suffering from an acute illness at the time of your procedure, we will need to reschedule it. Examples of chronic illnesses that can disqualify you include:

  • Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Renal failure
  • Heart disease
  • Blood clotting disorders

You Are Not a Smoker

You can also feel pretty confident that you will be considered a good candidate for this procedure if you are not a smoker. To qualify for breast augmentation, you must be able to go several weeks without nicotine to prepare for your procedure. Furthermore, you must be able to go several weeks without nicotine to recover from surgery as quickly and smoothly as possible.

You also must be willing and able to refrain from alcohol consumption for several weeks both before and after your surgery. If you smoke or drink alcohol daily, take some time to reflect on whether improving your appearance is worth giving up a vice or two for a month. If you don’t think you can go 28 days without nicotine, let us know during your initial consultation when we discuss the preparation and aftercare guidelines with you.

You Are Mentally Healthy

The best candidate for breast augmentation is in good mental health. This procedure can increase the size of your breasts, but it may not make you feel better about yourself. For example, if you suffer from body dysmorphia, you may not be satisfied with the results of your procedure.

You Are Displeased By the Shape of Your Breasts

Women primarily seek breast augmentation to increase the size of their breasts. With that being said, there is an excellent chance you will be considered a good candidate for this procedure if you are concerned about the shape of your breasts. For example, breast augmentation can improve your self-confidence significantly if you are worried about breasts that are:

  • Asymmetrical
  • Elongated
  • Flattened
  • Sagging

You Have Realistic Expectations About the Results

To qualify for breast augmentation, it is extremely important that you have realistic expectations about the results. We will discuss your cosmetic goals thoroughly to determine whether you can realistically achieve your desired results. If your ideal contours are unrealistic we will advise you on what we can do safely so you can determine whether this procedure is a good fit for you.

You will need implants that provide 175 cubic centimeters (cc) of volume if you want to go up a cup size. To go up three cup sizes, such as from an A to a D, you will need implants that provide 525 cc. However, it is not advisable to get implants larger than 450 or 500 cc. The size of the implants you can get depends on several factors, including:

  • Spine curvature
  • Rib curvature
  • Breast bone shape
  • Ribcage size

Who Is a Poor Candidate for This Procedure?

Your age may disqualify you from this procedure. If you are at least 18 years of age, according to the FDA, you may be a good fit for saline implants. However, you won’t be able to get breast augmentation if you’re 18 and want to get silicone implants. The FDA has only cleared this type of implant for women who are at least 22 years of age.

You also will be deemed a poor fit for this procedure if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant. Furthermore, this procedure is not recommended for individuals who have an abnormal mammogram or have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
