What to Expect When Getting a Nose Job

While every nose job nj will be different, there are a few steps that are similar for each one. Knowing what will happen during the surgery can make you feel more comfortable. Some of the steps your doctor will go through with you during the surgery include:

Step 1: Deciding on the Treatment

Once you decide to get a nose job nj, set up a consultation with a surgeon to discuss the procedure. During this time, your surgeon will ask about your goals and what you hope to get out of the surgery. They can discuss what options are available and give advice on what will look best to enhance your natural beauty.

During that consultation, your surgeon will take a look at the bone structure of your nose. When the evaluation is complete, they can discuss what changes they would make in the nose to enhance the whole face. This is the time to ask questions and see exactly how the doctor would make changes.

Step 2: Anesthesia

You will never need to spend a night at the hospital while getting a nose job nj. The doctor will use general or local anesthesia, which allows you to go home shortly after the procedure is done. General anesthesia allows you to sleep through the surgery, and local anesthesia keeps the pain away but allows you to stay awake.

Medication is used to help prevent pain and help you feel more comfortable. Both general and local anesthesia are efficient, but the choice depends on what you are most comfortable with, or our doctor may choose one over the other depending on your medical history. Discuss both options and then make a decision from there.

Step 3: The Incision

Your doctor can choose to do an open procedure or a closed procedure for your rhinoplasty. If they choose the closed procedure, the goal is to hide the cut inside your nose. If they choose the open procedure, the cut will be done on the tissue that separates the two nostrils of the nose. The type of work you have done on the nose can determine which type of cut the surgeon goes with.

For both incisions, the doctor will gently move the skin that covers up the nasal bones. This allows the surgeon to get in there and easily change the shape of the nose. They will put the skin back onto the nose when the rhinoplasty is complete.

Step 4: Changing the Shape of the Nose

The surgeon can now change the shape of the nose. They can make the nose smaller by removing some bone or cartilage. The surgeon can also make the nose larger by performing a cartilage graft. A cartilage graft is when the surgeon takes cartilage from another area, usually the septum, and adds it to the right areas of the nose.

Correcting the Septum

During the surgery, the doctor may correct the septum. For patients who suffer from a deviated septum, the surgeon will go in and reduce any projections that are inside the nasal cavity. This helps to improve breathing for the patient.

Step 5: Closing the Incision

After the surgeon has time to sculpt the nose into the right shape, they will lay all the nasal skin and tissues back. The surgeon will close up the incisions, making these cuts look as invisible as possible. If necessary, the surgeon will add additional cuts in the nostril creases to change their size, too.

Step 5: Recovery

Your surgeon will put gauze and splints around the nose. Leave these in place. They will help support the nose after the surgery while it heals. Ask your doctor how long you should keep the gauze and splints in place. It is likely you can take the gauze off after a week, but check just in case your surgeon wants those to stay on for longer.

The area of the nose will swell up a little bit. The amount of swelling is small and often no one else will notice You should stop noticing the swelling after a few weeks, and soon the final shape of the nose will be easy to see.

Avoid strenuous activities for up to six weeks. This allows the nose to heal without further injury. Stay away from anything that may hit the nose and cause damage during this time. You are free to go back to social activities, including work, after just two weeks.
