Freezing Away the Fat: Is CoolSculpting Really Effective?

coolsculpting treatment

Liposuction is one of the most popular body contouring treatments because it has been around for so long. But at the office of Dr. Gregory E. Rauscher, M.D. in Hackensack, NJ, we believe that just because something has been done for years doesn’t mean it’s the best method. CoolSculpting is a better alternative. Here’s what you need to know:

Is CoolSculpting Really Effective?

Yes. CoolSculpting really is effective. In fact, research has shown that this body contouring treatment is just as effective as liposuction, an invasive fat removal procedure that has been around since the 70s and popular since the 80s.

How Effective Is This Treatment?

The results you will enjoy after your non-invasive body contouring treatment depends on several factors. One of the most significant factors is the volume of fat you have in your targeted area. If you have a significant volume of fat, you can expect roughly 26% of your excess fat cells to be removed per treatment session.

However, if you are treating an area with a small surface area, like your neck, chin, underarms, or knees, up to 80% of excess fat cells can be removed. During your initial consultation, Dr. Rauscher in NJ will evaluate the physical structure of your body and examine the volume of fat in your targeted regions to give you a more accurate idea of the results you can expect.

How Does This Compare to Liposuction?

The results of liposuction are similar to the results of your first CoolSculpting session. Liposuction usually removes around 25% of excess fat cells from a targeted area. However, if the targeted area has a lot of surface area, like your abdomen, you can expect to lose around 20% of excess fat cells.

How Many Treatment Sessions Will I Need?

Most of our New Jersey clients find they only need one or two treatment sessions to sculpt the body of their dreams. If you’re treating a smaller area, you will only need one treatment session. If you’re treating several large areas, you may need one session to treat one area and two sessions to treat another area that has a higher volume of fat.

How Soon Will I See the Results of Treatment?

One of the great things about this treatment is you will see a continuous improvement in the contours of your body for roughly six months. The cryolipolysis device freezes and kills your fat cells within 40 to 60 minutes. But it takes anywhere from three to six months for your lymphatic system to flush out the dead fat cells.

There are several factors that affect how soon you will see the final results of your treatment. First, you can speed the results of your treatment by walking regularly. This supports a strong circulatory system, which supports an efficient, effective lymphatic system. Second, you can massage the treatment area five times daily for five minutes at a time.

How Does the Speed of Results Compare to Liposuction?

On paper, it seems that these two fat removal methods are the same. It takes six months to see the results of liposuction, too. The primary difference is liposuction involves the “immediate” removal of fat cells. The process takes about an hour per targeted area, but the fat cells are suctioned out of the targeted area before the procedure ends.

However, it takes six months for the swelling to go down. While it takes the same amount of time, or longer, to see the results of liposuction, there is an actual extensive recovery process. You will be in pain after your liposuction procedure, too, and the swelling will be uncomfortable until it dissipates after half of a year.

Am I a Good Candidate for Cryolipolysis?

One of the most compelling benefits of cryolipolysis is that nearly everyone is a good candidate. You should hold off on this treatment if you are pregnant or nursing. You may want to hold off on your session if you plan to have children in the future because the remaining fat cells in your trouble regions may expand if you consume too many calories during pregnancy.

To find out if this treatment is right for you, we recommend that you come in for an initial consultation. This gives us the opportunity to review your medical history, assess your current health, and discuss your aesthetic goals in detail. Barring pregnancy or a rare blood disorder that makes you sensitive to the cold, you are probably a good candidate.

Who Should Hold Off on This Treatment?

Pregnancy, nursing, and plans to expand your family in the future aren’t the only reasons you should hold off on this treatment. Cryolipolysis may not be right for you at this time if you are over 30 pounds away from your goal weight. If you need help to get within 30 pounds of your goal weight, consult with your primary care physician.
